Boulevard Left Turn/Median U-Turn Intersection
Definition:
With a Boulevard Left intersection, left turns from one or both roads are not allowed at the main intersection and are instead completed via U-turn movements at dedicated median openings. Traffic signals may be required at some U-turn locations, depending on traffic volumes. This application reduces delay by removing left-turn phases from the main intersection and improves safety by reducing conflict points. The design improves capacity at the main signalized intersection by 20 to 50 percent by removing the left-turns.
Benefits:
- Improves safety by reducing conflict points.
- Reduces delay and improves traffic operations at high volume intersections.
- Reduces cost and physical footprint compared to a grade-separated interchange.
- Enhances pedestrian safety and accessibility.
