Reduced Conflict Intersection

Definition:
A Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI) can reduce – or even eliminate – a significant number of severe crashes common when drivers must cross-over high traffic areas. Drivers turn right in the same direction of traffic, merge into the left lane, and then make a U-turn in the direction they intend to travel.
NOTES: A signalized RCI is referred to as a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection.
The median is sometimes closed off to eliminate all left-turns from the mainline onto the intersecting roadway, resulting in fewer conflict points.
Benefits:
- Improves safety by reducing conflict points and reducing the likelihood of right-angle crashes.
- Provides for free flow conditions along the major roadway.
